Health and safety
Last updated: October 2026
Sauna and cold water are wonderful, but they ask a lot of your body. Please read this before your session, and listen to our host on the day.
Before you start
Every guest completes a short health form before using the sauna. It only takes a minute, and it helps us make sure the sauna and cold plunge are safe for you.
The sauna is for guests aged 16 and over.
Check with your doctor first if you
- have heart problems, high or low blood pressure, or have had a stroke
- are pregnant
- have epilepsy, diabetes or a respiratory condition
- have recently had surgery or an injury
- take medication that affects your heart, blood pressure or ability to regulate temperature
Please don’t use the sauna if you have an infectious illness, an infectious skin condition or open wounds.
Don’t use the sauna or plunge
- after drinking alcohol or taking recreational drugs
- straight after intense exercise. Let your heart rate settle first
- on a very full or completely empty stomach
In the sauna
- The sauna is ready at around 70°C and can get hotter as the fire builds. Start with a short session and build up.
- Stay for around 10 to 15 minutes at a time, less if you’re new to sauna. There’s no prize for staying longest.
- Leave straight away if you feel dizzy, faint, sick, or get a headache. Tell our host.
- Sit on a towel and don’t touch the stove, flue or stove guard. They are extremely hot.
- Only our host adds wood or water to the stove.
- Remove jewellery and watches. Metal heats up quickly and can burn.
- Keep the door closed between entries to hold the heat, but never wedge or lock it.
Cold plunge and shower
- Cold water causes a sudden gasp and a spike in heart rate. Enter slowly, breathe out steadily, and keep your head above water.
- Stay in for seconds rather than minutes to start with. Get out if you feel numb, shaky or unwell.
- Never plunge alone or after drinking alcohol.
- Warm up gradually afterwards with a towel, warm clothes and rest.
Drink plenty of water
You’ll sweat a lot. Drink water before, between and after rounds.
Around the sauna
- Surfaces can be wet and slippery. Walk, don’t run.
- Keep clear of the chimney, firewood store and stove area.
- No glass, smoking or vaping in or near the sauna.
Our side of things
- A first aid trained host is on site throughout every hire, tending the fire and keeping an eye on everyone.
- We keep a fire extinguisher and fire blanket on site.
- We carry £5 million public liability insurance and a written risk assessment, available on request.
- We set up on a firm, level pitch, checked before every session.
If you’re unsure about anything, ask our host. We’d always rather you take it gently.
